Facebook videos, livening things up.

We’ve talked about incorporating video into your social media strategy and how it can create a more dynamic and engaging site for your customers. Adding a video to Facebook is no exception. It’ll liven up your Facebook page and provide your RV buyers with a unique, in-depth experience.

Uploading video is easy; it’s just like inserting a link or uploading a photo. Here’s how you get it done:

Select the video camera icon in your Facebook Status Bar, it’s the fourth in from the left.

The majority of the time you’ll probably just be uploading a video (instead of recording a video) so select the “Upload a Video” option from the menu. Your upload screen will then instantly appear. The video you are going to upload must be under 1,024 MB and less than 20 minutes long (and in reality, your video should probably be under 4 minutes… too long can get boring).

Select the “Browse” button and then choose the video file you’d like to upload from your computer. After you’ve selected your video file be sure to enter in text where it says “What’s on your mind?”. This text can give a brief description of the video, provide a unique headline or share anything else you’d like. Look everything over, once more, and when you’re ready, hit the “Share” button.

The image you see when you upload a Facebook video

If this is your first time uploading a video to Facebook a screen will pop up asking you to agree to their terms of service. Select yes. While your video is uploading a second screen will pop up showing you the progress of your video and where you are in the uploading process – this may take a few minutes, so be patient. An “Upload Complete” box will appear after the file is finished uploading and will offer you two options “Close and Edit Video” and “Close”:

This is what Facebook will show when your video is done uploading

Simply click on “Close and Edit Video” where you’ll be taken to a screen that will let you further customize what appears on your RV dealership’s page.

The screen where you will tag and customize your video

You can “tag” people in your videos – this will let your followers know who appears in the video as well as link those people to the video posting. Tag everyone who’s in your video, this will help your video appear in more Facebook streams and get more attention. You can also title your video, add a description, select the thumbnail that will show on your profile and adjust your privacy settings.

As a final note, Facebook videos can also be embedded into your website. You can take the source code directly from Facebook and allow the video to appear in both places. An added bonus is the “Become a Fan” button (for Facebook) will then automatically appear next to your video!  That’s a great way to get visitors on your website to “Fan” you on Facebook!

Step #4: Be “Findable”.

Do what it takes to make sure your dealership's social media efforts can be found!

With all the time and hard work you put into your dealership’s social media efforts it’s definitely worth doing everything you can to get social media exposure.  There are some easy ways to make your RV dealership’s social media efforts more “findable”.  Here are some quick things you can do to make sure you’re accessible to your desired audience:

1.  Add yourself to Twitter directories
There are Twitter directories setup to help customers find businesses and people who match their interests. Taking the time to make sure your dealership is listed is important.  Once you setup a Twitter account and start tweeting, make sure your dealership’s Twitter is listed on Twellow.  Twellow  searches through Twitter profiles for keywords that are in profiles (like camping, RV, outdoors, travel, etc.).  To get listed under the correct categories, make sure your profile is complete and has keywords that work for you (AND, if you can’t find yourself on Twellow, submit yourself here).

In addition to Twellow, get your dealership listed on wefollow.  At wefollow users can browse categories, do a search, and find people to follow.  With wefollow, you have to manually add you Twitter account to the directory.  Add your RV dealership under categories like (like camping, RVing, travel).

2.  Integrate social into everything
Let people know that your RV dealership has gone social!  Add your Facebook page and Twitter username to your business cards.  Put a “Follow us on Facebook” call out on your website.  Make sure there is an RSS feed button on your blog.  Make a social email signature that links to your Facebook/Twitter/blog.  List your Twitter and Facebook addresses on direct mail pieces and giveaway items.  Let your customers know that they can find you where they do their social networking!

3.  Submit your blogs
If you start a blog at your dealership (which we highly recommend, here and here), make sure you get it listed in blog directories.  Setup a profile on Technorati, a blog directory, and claim your dealership’s blog.  Visit Google Blogs and submit your blog.  Make your blog as searchable as possible!

4.  Claim your Facebook name
Once you have 20 fans (or “likes) on Facebook, you can claim a vanity URL for your Facebook page.  Rather than the long URL Facebook assigns your dealership, you can specify what you want the URL to be.  Make it http:///www.facebook.com/anynamerv Simply visit here to get this done.  This will make it easier to share your Facebook page, and easier for fans to remember.

5.  Participate often
More than anything else, being active and consistent on your social media sites will get you the most exposure.  Participate in conversations and provide insightful comments/writing/ideas/tips.  Don’t be sporadic, be disciplined and driven.  The more you participate, the bigger your following will be and the more presence you will have!

Facebook events.

Whether you’re having your annual open house or throwing a BBQ to kickoff the summer camping season, making sure your RV customers know that your upcoming event is important. An easy way to announce your event is though Facebook Events. This Facebook feature makes it easy to share events, invite people to events, and track participation.

If you have a Facebook Page for your RV dealership, make a note to start using Facebook Events to let people know what’s going on at your dealership, it’s easy!

You can start a Facebook Event simply by using the status bar on your Facebook business page. The event option will be the third icon in from the left – the small calendar button.

Where you can start your dealership's event posts

Once you click on the icon a screen will appear allowing you to start filling out some of your event details:

Fill in all your event details on Facebook

You can enter in the title of your event, details on where the event will take place, and of course, the date and time of the event.

Be sure to enter in a caption in the status bar above to really draw attention.  This could be something along the lines of “The summer camping season is here, come down this Saturday for a BBQ and check out all of our great units”.  After filling in all of the details your event will show up on your Facebook page.

What your Facebook event will look like

By setting up your event in the status bar you’re only entering in the basic details. If you want to provide more detailed information on your event (like an event photo) you’ll need to click on the bolded event title to reach a screen that looks like this:

Customize your Facebook event

In the right hand menu you’ll see an option to “edit” your event. You can change, edit and add details, customize your description, add a picture and start inviting people to attend.

As an added bonus you can allow people to write memos and post photos on your wall to really make your event interactive.

Getting the most out of Twitter.

“Who really cares what I had for breakfast”, “I don’t have anything to talk about”, “Nobody calls when I post inventory on Twitter”.  I have many RV dealers tell me that Twitter seems pointless. In all fairness, it’s true, Twitter most absolutely can be a pointless waste of time, IF you approach tweeting that kind of  breakfast mentality (I get the breakfast example thrown at me quite often!).  On the other hand, Twitter can be an amazing tool for finding customers, connecting with prospects, and sharing information.  Again, you just have to approach Twitter in the right way.

So what’s the wrong way and what the right way on Twitter?  Here’s a quick breakdown:

How not to use Twitter

1.  Don’t shout your message
Twitter (and most social media platforms) is a completely different way to market your RV dealership.  Unlike TV, radio, print, direct mail, or newspaper, Twitter is a not a forum to “push” or “shout” your sales message.  Shout too much (any shouting might be too much at first) and you’ll just get blocked or ignored.  People don’t use to Twitter to get sold to, they use it to connect.  Take a look at your tweets, are you selling too hard?  Twitter is not the place for any type of hard sell or self-serving promotion.

2.  Don’t share details about your breakfast (unless they’re really funny)
If it sounds boring when you write it, it’s going to sound boring when someone reads it.  Use Twitter to write about what you’re passionate about, to talk about camping/RVing, to share tips, to check in with customers, and to highlight special events.  We have a ton of “What to write” archives for when you get stuck.  Don’t take the “What’s happening” prompt literally.  Write about what people will care about.  It might take some time to brainstorm, but it makes a difference.

3.  Twitter is not an inventory stream
This piggybacks of #1 and #2, don’t shout and don’t be boring.  If all you use Twitter for is to push inventory and post trade-ins nobody is going to pay attention.  Unless it’s a one of a kind deal or an amazing unit it’s not going to do much for you.  People aren’t using Twitter to get inventory listings, they’ll go to your website for that, when they’re ready.  A constant stream of inventory tweets will get lost in the noise.

4.  Don’t just follow celebrities
When was the last time Ashton Kutcher tried to buy an RV from you?  The celebrities are numerous (and often entertaining) on Twitter, but they’re not really your audience.  You need to find real people, real prospects who will care about what you have to say.  There are a plethora of tools to help you find locals on Twitter, to search for camping or RVing enthusiasts, and to help you locate the RV industry on Twitter.  Following a few famous people is fine, but you need to be narrowing in on your prospects and listening to them. (More on finding who to follow here)

How to get the most out of Twitter

1.  Listen
We really can’t say it enough, listen listen listen.  To truly understand how to get the most out of Twitter, take the time to hear what people are saying.  Listen to those who tweet well, to the RV community, to customers and potential customers, and to competitors.

2.  Model your Twitter after a great “tweeter”
If you’re not sure how to start tweeting on your own, listen until you find someone who impresses you — then mold your style and technique after them.  No harm in learning from the best!  Here’s a quick selection of a few grade A tweeters who might get you on the right track: @Jaunted, @nytimestravel, @zappos, @JetBlue, @chrisbrogan, @chrisguillebeau, and of course, @jaycorvs.

3.  Be conversational
Instead of pushing your sales message, present topics that can drive conversation.  Post interesting article and ideas, pose questions, answer questions, link to articles, say “hello”, say “thank-you”, and be helpful.

4.  Consistency is key
You can’t tweet once and expect a sales miracle.  Building a following and connecting with customers takes time, patience, and consistency.  It’s worth it.  Tweet regularly, converse regularly, and pay attention.  Make Twitter a part of your routine.  Write down ideas and schedule time to post.

Twitter is not pointless.  When you stop talking about food and screaming “Sale Sale Sale!!” and when you start listening and conversing you’ll make progress and understand how powerful this platform can be.
