Social Media for Dealers

A resource from HuebnerPetersen's Dealer Marketing Services

Making a Connection

As an RV dealer, you understand the importance of making lasting relationships with customers as soon as they enter your dealership. You do this through your charismatic sales people and the trust they build with your customers. Social marketing should work the same way. Adding a personal touch to your social media outlets can provide a human-element that people are naturally drawn towards. We’re not saying post about what you ate for lunch, but reminding customers that a real human being is behind all those Tweets can add value.

Try posting pictures of your sales people with your new Jayco models. If your dealership is family-owned, add a Facebook picture of your family at the dealership. Encourage your readers to post pictures of their wonderful experiences in your RVs.

Also, Tweets and Facebook status updates can be a great tool to connect with customers on a personal and emotional level. Welcome a new employee publically or post an update about how you just helped a family of five find the perfect RV for their trip to the Black Hills. These little personal touches help you build relationships and rapport with customers before they even walk onto your lot; you’re already a step ahead!

Here are a few easy tips for adding personal touches to your social media sites:

  • Use “we” and “us” to add a level of intimacy
  • Show emotion to give customers something to relate to, but make sure to find a balance. Too much emotion can be off putting
  • Tell stories online. Stories are a powerful way to engage and impact readers.
  • Be funny, but a word of caution, be aware that people are easily offended, confused, and mislead. So keep it classy!
  • Add posts about exciting updates in your area. Remember to keep it positive! If your local sports team is doing well, congratulate them publicly! The support you show reflects your appreciation for the community your customers live in

Content is king (even for RV dealerships)!

Create RV content for social media

It’s an age old question, how do you keep you customers coming back to your website (or blog, or Twitter feed, or Facebook page, or YouTube channel).  How? Content.

Produce new, relevant, interesting, and action-driving content.  Put the time into thinking about what your customers want, and give it to them in spades.

For this week, take the time to read this blog post, “Ways to Keep Your Customers Coming Back“, from Search Engine Journal for a no nonsense look at the kind of content that will attract customers to your RV website.

Let us know what you think!

What you offer matters!

Why should your customers (or potential customers) “find” your RV dealership on Facebook, or “follow” your dealership on Twitter? What are you offering on Facebook or Twitter?  Is it something that actually matters to your customers? If not, they have no reason to build a relationship in these arenas.

Read this shockingly simple observation (and cartoon!) from Tom Fishburne about how you can’t just say “follow us” and not back it up with something!

Get social this year!

A new year for social media at your RV dealership

Happy New Year!  It’s officially 2011!

The beginning of a brand new year is always exciting.  It feels something akin to clean slate, a new starting point.  The possibilities ahead in the year are endless.  I love this feeling, it’s invigorating.

The beginning of a new year is the perfect time to set some social media marketing goals for your RV dealership.  Make 2011 the year that your RV dealership gets social, really social.

Think about what you currently do with social media marketing, what you wish your dealership was doing, and what you’ve heard about that sounds interesting (Foursquare, Groupon, LinkedIn Answers, Facebook Groups) and make a list of social media resolutions for your dealership.

Here’s a bit of framework for your dealership’s social media resolutions:

1.  Start small and be specific. Think resolutions like: 1 Tweet per day for the dealership, or 1 blog post per week, or commenting on two RV industry blogs per week.

2.  Think big picture. What do you want to accomplish with social media marketing? Raise awareness for your dealership? Get more Twitter/Facebook followers?  Use social media to share offers (and track their effectiveness). Nail down what you want to accomplish this year!

3. Don’t limit your choices.  In 2011, expand your scope beyond Twitter and Facebook. Decide to commit to a blog, or read more industry writing, or learn about a new tool (again, Groupon, Foursquare, etc.).

4.  Aim high, but be realistic. Think about the resources your dealership has for social media (time, money, people).  Make sure you factor these into your resolutions.  Assign specific tasks to employees, parse out a little budget for social media, and really commit to giving social media some of your time.

However you come up with your resolutions, stay on top of them.  Social media requires consistency and commitment!  Don’t worry, we’re sticking around in 2011 to help provide ideas and to keep you on track!

Missed opportunities?

With social media, you can’t just sit back and hope marketing happens — you have to be active.  One of the easiest ways to be active is to respond to the social media material generated by others.  When you do this, you increase your search rankings, you make new connections, you generate ideas for your own content, and you share more with your audience (and sharing is what social media is all about!).

So, how do your respond?  There are tons of ways! Write a blog post responding or featuring the content, comment on a blog post, retweet on Twitter, respond on Twitter, respond on Facebook, feature on your Facebook page — the list goes on and on.

We’ve scoured this week’s RV social media activity and found some nuggets that your RV dealership could have responded to:
