Social Media for Dealers

Your dealership – not so frequently asked questions.

Opening your dealership up using social media

Developing topics and themes for writing seems to be the #1 request we get. We’ve got ideas all over the place — here, here, and here for starters. But, why not take it a step further. Social media is about interaction, about getting personal (like sharing your RV dealership’s story) and opening yourself up to your fans and customers.

Solicit your fans and followers to see what they want to know. Answer some tough questions, bring up some insightful topics and let them get to know your business on a deeper level.

You could do a FAQ’s post (or a “not so frequently asked questions post”), answer one question a week or post in any other fashion you can devise. Here are some questions to get you started, and to give your followers an idea of what to ask:

  • What drew you to the RV manufacturers you carry? Why do you continue to carry their products today?
  • What is your favorite part of the RV sales process and why?
  • What is your favorite role that you’ve held at your RV dealership?
  • What got you into this business in the first place? What motivates you to stay with it today?
  • What is your favorite, all time, RV dealership memory?
  • How has your RV dealership changed over the years?
  • Why are you passionate about the RV industry? Why do you love it?

Answer honestly. Don’t making selling your focus. Be yourself.

What to write #424: Sizzlin’ Summer Edition

Talk about road trip destinations

It’s summer, the busiest time of the year in the RVing world, so it’s a time when blog ideas should be sprouting like crazy! BUT, just in case you’re having a little trouble generating topics or thinking of things to post about, here are a few thoughts to get you started on your summer social media posting:

1.  Write about the new 2011 RV products you’re expecting on your lot – don’t sell or push them on your readers, just announce each product and get everyone excited!

2.  Share your top 10 favorite RV-Q recipes (do one big post or spread them out in several posts)

3.  Get personal, talk about your (and maybe you employees’) camping plans for the summer

4.  Give details on a little known travel route through your state or your favorite top secret place to camp

5.  Research and then share info on the roadside wonders in your state. Think “biggest ball of yarn”, “world’s largest lobster”, “world’s largest sand crane”

6.  Give a list of the top 5 summer RV accessories that you have available in your parts department

7.   Make a list of the best weekend camping destinations in your area

8.  Start a “Don’t you wish you were RVing right now” tweet series and name something you could be doing if you were on an RV trip.

Summer is when RVing and camping are on the mind, so it’s perfect opportunity to write about topics your customers are interested in NOW!  Capture their interest, make a connection, share stories, and become a resource.

Use any material you can find!

I know, I know, it’s hard to come up with quality content for your blog/twitter feed/Facebook page/YouTube channel.  I really do know.  There’s a few ways to make it easy, but here’s the easiest trick of all! Find great content that others have put together and feature it or link to it (just make sure to give credit to the original creator).

Need an example?

In May 2010, Jayco began rolling out “Inside Jayco” web videos. Each edition will provide a in-depth and customer centric look at different core Jayco products and practices.  It’s a fun way to give customers an inside look at Jayco!  As a Jayco dealer working to connect with customers, this is great content to use on your sites!  Post the videos on your blog (YouTube provides you an “embed” code that you can paste into your blog) and then link to your post on Facebook and Twitter (you can also post the videos directly to Facebook).

The “Inside Jayco” Jay Feather video is hot off the press (or hot off the camera!) — it’s brand new and ready to share with your customers!

Jayco will be introducing new “Inside Jayco” editions throughout the summer months.  When you’re having a slow day, this is an easy way to generate some quality content!  Subscribe to Jayco’s YouTube channel and follow Jayco on Twitter or Facebook to stay up to date!

SEO, another reason to blog.

We’ve talked before about why your RV dealership should have blog.  We’ve covered the points about sharing knowledge and building content.  BUT, there’s another powerful reason your dealership should be blogging.  It helps with search rankings.  Yup, those all-important Google/Bing/Yahoo listings.

Having a blog helps your RV dealership gain more exposure and earn better rankings in search engines, organically.  (Any Internet “guru” will tell you – a high rank on Google is a very good thing).  Incorporating a blog into your dealership’s website will give you the opportunity to positively impact your website’s search rankings. Additionally, Hubspot reports that small businesses that blog see 55% more website visits, 97% more links to their website, and 434% more pages indexed by search engines than their competitors who don’t blog.

Why does blogging help with SEO (search engine optimization)?

Focus & expertise

Search engines give credit to websites/blogs that focus around a particular topic.  Consistently posting about travel, RVing, or camping will create a focus for your blog/website that search engines will pick up.

Fresh content

Blogs lend themselves to frequent posting.  Posting 1-2 weeks is enough to keep your blog current and “fresh”.  Search engines give credit to new and updated content.

Links

It’s easy to add links to blog posts to illustrate points and enhance stories.  AND, create good content and others will link to you.  Inbound and (to an extent) outbound links help boost search engine rankings.

Comments

Most blogs (and your dealership’s blog should) leave room for visitor comments.  Soliciting comments and replying to comments help beef up blog visibility.  Additionally, browsing others’ blogs and participating in their “comments” sections (and linking back to your site or blog) lend a helping hand.

Blogs have a wide range of benefits for your RV dealership — boosting your website’s search engine rankings (SEO) is a great reason to give blogging a shot!
