Social Media for Dealers

A resource from HuebnerPetersen's Dealer Marketing Services

Feeling Bogged Down?

Do you ever get the feeling that you’re drowning in a sea of social media sites and to-do lists? That you have ideas, but absolutely no time to get things done? That there are so many things to update and you can’t get to them all? This is what we hear constantly from dealers trying to tackle social media on their own. The good news? You don’t have to do it alone.

For starters, sit down and make a calendar. Take an hour at the start of each month and choose what topics you’ll cover and on what days, what sites you’ll update when and ideas to share that month. Trust us, it will help you take a load off. Once you have nailed down what it is you want to cover that month, start doling out responsibility. Your dealership is chalk full of people that can help and happen to be experts in their field. Why wouldn’t you capitalize on this talent and expertise? Give each person a day (or a few days) and have them write out some updates, blog posts, take pictures, or shoot some footage to fulfill the topic they were assigned.

Don’t assume that because you set up the accounts, that you have to be the only one working on them. Start a calendar and share the work. Your employees may not even see it as work and many may even find it enjoyable.

Add a photo to your blog!

It adds a new dimension and another way to engage!

You’ve probably noticed that almost every post we have on the rvsocialmedia.com blog has a photo (an attractive and relevant photo at that!). The reason behind the photos is that they add another dimension to your blog post, they add a focal point. With an intriguing picture your readers will want to keep going, read more and take the time to see what you’re all about. It’s another way to connect, engage and bring readers to your site.

With that said, there are a few resources you can use for images:

1.  Your own photo library.

You have images of units, camp-outs, tailgating etc. Use those when you can. You’ll seem relatable and it will give your readers a glimpse into your life.

2.  Flickr – Creative Commons
Flickr has their photos categorized under “Creative Commons” and “All Rights Reserved”. If a photo is listed as “All Rights Reserved” you cannot use it without the express consent of the artist.

3.  Zemanta
If you use WordPress.com to host your blog, there is a new feature called Zemanta, you can click here to access the WordPress info page. Zemanta helps you find relevant photos, links etc. for your post and insert them directly from the page your writing on. Super convenient and easy to use.

4.  Free Stock Photo Sites

There are many more free stock photo sites out there, those are just a few! They can be great resources and provide colorful, usually professional photos for free!

Remember: When using photos that you didn’t take, make sure that you are giving the photographer credit for their work, it’s the nice thing to do. We like the format of (or see the actual photo credit at the bottom of the post):

Spice up your blog!

Top 10 RV blogging tips

Building a blog for your RV dealership is one of the best ways to reaching out to potential customers on the social web.  A blog is a terrific platform for sharing your RV expertise, soliciting questions (and providing answers!), keeping customers updated on events, and building content you can use elsewhere (think Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, discussion boards).  However, writing regularly on your blog is a tough commitment (consistent writing is a must) and coming up with topics day after day (week after week) can be a challenge.

Not to fear!  That’s entirely why rvsocialmedia.com is here!  Today, we’ve stumbled on a list of 69 Secret Tips To Make Your Blog Rock from Jeff Bullas.  We’ve scoured his list and have pulled out our favorite 10 tips for RV dealership blogging:

  • Find out about your customers Pain Points – Write posts that provide solutions for your customers problems
  • Publish content on what not to do! – highlighting where something hasn’t worked (the names shall remain anonymous of course)
  • Subscribe to the top industry blogs in your market, both company blogs and personal blogs for ideas
  • Sign up other staff to write on topics in your industry or market that they are passionate about
  • When you have a great idea, go straight to your “add new” button and write the headline and save it as a draft or write it down before you forget it.
  • Run polls and surveys on your blog
  • Make the blog easy to find on your company’s web page with a large banner or button
  • Comment on other blogs and news articles to show your thinking/expertise, but also link people back to your blog
  • Link to your blog on your Facebook fan page

Reuse and recycle?

Reusing old social media content

Coming up with new content for your social media efforts can be tricky — it’s not necessarily something that comes naturally to anyone (even us!). A big question that tends to loom when content picking gets slim is “Can I re-use some of the content I’ve already written?”.  The short answer is yes. Yes, but with caution and care. Using the same material over and over can be repetitive, boring and people will inherently lose interest quickly. Would you want to read the same post, with slight changes, over and over again? Nope, you’d stop reading, and so will your customers.

Repeating content has its pros — it makes your life a tad bit easier (phew, a break from writing so you can wear your other RV dealer hats!), it helps you introduce your writing focus to new readers, and it helps you emphasize key points and topics that you want to make sure your audience hears (and understands).  All good things!

With that said there, just re-posting blog writing, copy and pasting old tweets, rewriting the same old Facebook update, and re-linking to that YouTube video for the 100th time will work against your dealership’s social media efforts. Here are a few tips that can help you reuse your content wisely:

1.  Re-read & update

Before you hit the “post” button, take a quick read through the material you’re reusing.  Is there anything that can be updated/added/removed?  Could you add a spiffy new image or an update line?  Do what you can to make sure that your re-posted material is as relevant and current as possible.

2.  Add a different spin

Change up  your blog post headline to give your content a new/different angle, write a new intro focusing on a different aspect of your topic, add new tags and keywords to reach different audiences.

3.  Try a new platform for that old material

Instead of just re-blogging your “How to winterize your RV” blog post, pull out key excerpts and turn them into tweets or post small portions of the writing to Facebook.  Conversely, see if you have any tweets that could be turned into longer, more informative blog posts.

4.  Limit reuse to “once in a while”

Don’t make a habit out of reusing your old writing.  Do it here in there, when timing and events call for it, but don’t make it a regular habit.  Need a ratio?  Think one out of every ten posts (or once every two weeks).  One of the most important aspects of social media marketing is providing fresh (& juicy) content.
