We’ve all had a moment when we’ve sat down at the computer to create an email address, username, URL or other unique online moniker only to discover that someone has beaten us to the punch. There’s nothing worse than wanting to use SmithRVSales on Twitter only to be thwarted by someone a few states away, and despite the “suggestions”, adding 9910 to the end doesn’t make it any better.
So what’s the solution? Start reserving those names now whether you have any intention of using the platform right away or not. You could start by hitting the big ones Facebook, Twitter, a blogging platform (Blogger, WordPress, Typepad, Posterous, etc.)… or you could take a short cut and use a username checking service. If you’re using Knowem? you have a couple of options. They sort all of their online sites by category to help you navigate. You can simply type in potential user names to see what type of availability exists or you can sign up for one of their plans and they’ll do it for you (at a one time, low rate).
Namechck let’s you type in potential usernames or a username you already have to see what’s taken. It’s great for a quick glance just to see where you’re at. It’s easy to use and easy to see where you need to go.
